On 16th December 2024, an Ikigai workshop by Ms. Jyotsna was held at HFSI, Powai. The Ikigai workshop was designed for Primary students Grades 4 and 5, to introduce them to the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which loosely translates to "a reason for being" or "the joy of living." The objective of the workshop was to engage students in self-reflection and to help them recognize their interests, strengths, passions, and ways they can contribute to the community and the world.
The workshop began with simple, age-appropriate questions about themselves including what they aspire to become when they grow up an led them to finding their Ikigai. The facilitator took them through different activities like helping others, learning new skills, and finding joy in everyday life. Students were encouraged to write or draw their thoughts in each section. For example, they were asked to write a letter to their future selves. To connect the concept of Ikigai to the real world, the students brainstormed ideas for a profession that combined their interests and talents.
The Ikigai workshop was successful in engaging primary-grade students with a simple yet meaningful concept. The students demonstrated enthusiasm and creativity when reflecting on their passions and abilities. They also displayed empathy during the group discussions about how they could help others. Many students expressed a desire to apply what they had learned to help their classmates or community, signaling that the session had a positive impact.
